החפץ אל השלמותLonging for Perfection
ha-hefetz el ha-shlemutIn Gamatria ↗
Our wholeness lies in the longing, not in never falling.
Without the thought of return, Kook writes, no one could find rest and spiritual life could not develop. Conscience demands justice, goodness and perfection, yet moral perfection lies far beyond what a weak human being can actually achieve. How can one strive for the impossible? His answer is that return is natural to the human being and completes him. Our constant liability to stumble does not spoil our perfection, because its real foundation is the steady yearning and desire for perfection. That desire is the very root of return, and over the course of a life it keeps winning out.
