ישוב האדם אל עצמוReturn to Oneself

yashuv ha-adam el atzmoIn Gamatria ↗

Coming home to oneself is the first step home to God.

When one forgets the essence of one's own soul and stops looking inward, everything turns confused and doubtful. The primary return, which lights up the darkness at once, is a return to oneself, to the root of one's soul, and with it, immediately, to God, the soul of all souls. Kook applies this to a single person, a whole people, humanity and all existence, whose corruption always comes from forgetting itself. A return to God that does not first gather one's own scattered parts is a false return, taking God's name in vain. This, he says, is the secret of the messianic light: the world's soul returning to its root.
