Body, tradition and clear sight: three doors to one return.

Kook opens by sorting return into three orders. Natural return has a bodily side, where harmful conduct breeds illness and a person who sees his own fault turns back to the laws of life. It also has a deeper inner side: conscience, literally the 'rebuke of the kidneys', which aches when one strays. Faith-based return draws on the Torah and the Prophets, which promise pardon to those who turn. Intellectual return, the highest, grows from a clear and whole view of life once the first two have left their mark. It is full of endless light, turning sins into merits and every fall into an ascent.
