The broken light, sorted from finest to coarsest, became four worlds.

All that is emanated has four elements, the four letters of YHVH. These are the four worlds: Atzilut (emanation), Beriah (creation), Yetzirah (formation) and Asiyah (action). They are like a person's soul, body, garments and house. Atzilut corresponds to Chokhmah, Beriah to Binah, Yetzirah to Tiferet and Asiyah to Malkhut, each set apart by a screen (masach). The fallen kings were sorted among them. The finest was raised into Atzilut, the lesser into Beriah, the lesser still into Yetzirah, then Asiyah. What could not be sifted at all stayed as shell, with holy sparks trapped inside: again the eleven spices of incense.
