The shells live on borrowed light and fade when it returns.

The shells (klippot) were formed from the dregs of the seven kings who fell to Beriah and 'died'. So in Atzilut they hold only at the back of Ze'ir Anpin and Nukva, never higher. They are eleven, like the value of the letters VH (6 + 5) and the incense spices, and their life comes from those two letters. In exile, Ze'ir Anpin and Nukva fall away from Abba and Imma, and their light feeds the shells. When they rise and reunite, that life withdraws, the shells lapse, and the Name is whole. In Atzilut the holy is unmixed. Beriah is mostly good but mixed, Yetzirah half and half, and Asiyah mostly bad.
