שלש אמות אמ"שThe Three Mothers
shalosh imot emeshAlef א ↗Mem מ ↗Shin ש ↗
Fire above, water below, breath deciding between.
The mothers aleph, mem and shin form a scale: a pan of merit, a pan of guilt, and the tongue of the balance deciding between them. Mem hums, shin hisses, and aleph is the air holding the middle. They are a great secret sealed with six rings, and from them come air, water and fire. In the world, shin made heaven from fire, mem made earth from water, and aleph made the air between. In the year they are heat, cold and the moist season. In the body they are head, belly and torso. Each letter is crowned king and permuted as male and female, for example aleph as אמ"ש and אש"ם.
