Spoken aloud, the letters carved by sin rise and are rewritten.
Knowing that everything that happens to you is for your good is, R. Nachman says, a taste of the World to Come. The Talmud (Pesachim 50a) describes that time: one blessing, 'who is good and does good,' will be said over everything, with no separate blessing for bad news. Psalm 56, which praises God's mercy and God's judgment in the same words, points the same way. The way to reach this is spoken confession before a sage. Every sin carves a bad combination of letters onto one's bones. Saying the confession aloud draws those letters out and rebuilds them as holy speech, which returns kingship to God.
