גשר צר מאדThe Very Narrow Bridge

gesher tzar me'odIn Gamatria ↗

A very narrow bridge, and no fear at all.

When someone starts serving God, he is shown distance, as if he were being pushed away from above. In truth every distancing is a drawing near. He needs great encouragement, and a holy stubbornness, not to give up his place when he is thrown down again and again; every true tzaddik went through this. Each small move away from coarseness counts for thousands of miles above, and those moves come back to help in hard times. 'A person must cross a very, very narrow bridge, and the main thing is not to be afraid at all.' He adds an image: a tree whose leaves grow for a hundred years, then burst open with a cannon's boom.
