כסומא ההלך על שפת הנהרThe Blind Man by the River

Eyes closed by choice are as blind as eyes closed by nature.

Watchfulness means examining one's deeds and ways, whether they are good or not. Reason demands it; even animals flee what harms them. One who goes through life without looking is like a blind man walking on a riverbank, and blindness by choice is no better than blindness by nature. Jeremiah mourned a generation that ran on 'like a horse rushing into battle,' never stopping to look. This is the evil inclination's plan, and it is Pharaoh's plan: 'Let the work be heavier,' so that no one has breath to think. If people paused even briefly, they would regret and leave the sin. Haggai cries, 'Set your heart on your ways.' No one is saved without God's help, but God watches over those who watch over themselves. 'If I am not for myself, who is for me?'
