Torah brings watchfulness, and each rung brings the next.
Piety rests on true wholeness and wisdom, not on what foolish pietists imagine. Moses sums up service in one verse: 'What does the Lord your God ask of you, but to fear Him, walk in His ways, love Him, serve Him with all your heart, keep His commandments' (Deuteronomy 10:12). It holds five parts. Fear, as before a great king. Walking in His ways, right character: as He is merciful, be merciful. Love, wanting to please Him as a child pleases a parent. Wholeness of heart, serving for His sake alone. Keeping every mitzvah in full detail. The Sages set these in a finer order in the baraita of Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair (Avodah Zarah 20b): Torah brings watchfulness, then zeal, cleanliness, separation, purity, piety, humility, fear of sin, holiness, the holy spirit, and the revival of the dead.
