Seek His honor, and shade your generation like a tree.

The third part of piety is intention. Serving to purify one's soul and earn the world to come is not bad, Luzzatto says, but it is not the best, since it is still for oneself. The pious intend that the Master's honor grow. The Zohar asks who is a ḥasid: one who does kindness with his Maker. Such a person grieves over the exile and the ruined Temple, since they lessen God's honor, and prays for redemption. Who am I to pray for Jerusalem? Each must say 'the world was created for me', and it pleases God that His children ask, even before the time has come. The ḥasid also aims his deeds at shielding and acquitting his whole generation, like a tree giving shade. God loves those who love Israel, as a father loves those who love his children.
