Each letter of the Name can be spelled out in full (milui), and its Heh and Vav in different ways, giving four main 'fillings' named by their values: AV, 72, filled with Yods; SAG, 63, with one Alef; MAH, 45, filled with Alefs; BAN, 52, filled with Hehs. After Sefer Yetzirah, Yod signals kindness, Alef mercy and Heh judgment. So AV is all kindness (Chokhmah), SAG kindness with some mercy (Binah), MAH mercy leaning to kindness (Zeir Anpin), BAN full judgment (Malkhut). These four drive the rest of the book.
