Look past the hard garment: the hand inside is love.
Two terms describe how the conducts relate. 'Chaining down' (hishtalshelut) means one gives rise to the next: Gevurah issues from Chesed, so punishment comes from kindness — to bring people to awe and to benefit the one corrected. 'Enclothing' (hitlabshut) means one hides inside another. A father who strikes his son looks cruel to onlookers, yet he disciplines only because he loves; his love is clothed in judgment. So God's kindness is sometimes hidden inside hardship, which scripture calls the hiding of His face.
