Truth rises from the ground; goodness answers from above.

The world is mostly governed through Malkhut, exacting judgment; Zeir Anpin is gentler justice. When people merit it, Zeir Anpin joins Malkhut — a joining called zivug, coupling — after Chokhmah and Binah first soften it. The book insists zivug is a parable: as Nefesh HaChaim puts it, like a mind combining two ideas to bring forth a third. Every such union depends on deeds below: 'Truth springs from the earth… the Lord will give good.' The awakening from below is the 'feminine waters'; the flow it draws from above, the 'masculine waters'.
