I1:1–2
רק בבחינת פעולותיוKnown Only Through Deeds
rak bivchinat pe'ulotavIn Gamatria ↗
Of the Endless we speak only of what His hands have done.
The book opens by calling God Ein Sof, 'the Unlimited', for He has no boundary of space or time, and His will is as unbounded. A limited mind cannot grasp the unlimited, so to think about His essence is forbidden and yields only imagination. Everything the book says about sefirot, names and diagrams speaks only of His will and providence as known from His actions. Citing the Gra and Ramchal's Adir BaMarom, it calls this the general rule of all Kabbalah: even the name Ein Sof refers to His deeds, not His essence.
