Sorrow shuts the door; joy is the open window.

Every heavy service done to repair the Shekhinah must be done in joy (Deuteronomy 28:47). The Zohar (Vayechi 216b) teaches that she does not rest where there is sadness, which is why she left Jacob all the years he mourned Joseph. Joy comes from seeing that the endless One watches over a creature as small as a gnat, like a king who calls a lowly servant to stand among his princes. The sun, too, goes out each morning 'rejoicing like a hero', singing.
