Above and below mean more and less understood.
Shaltiel objects: if spiritual things have no place, where do the sefirot rise and descend? Yehoyada answers that the sefirot have no body or quantity; the Ra'avad says what has no quantity has no beginning or end. A physical place bears and surrounds what stands in it. A spiritual place is a cause that bears, sustains and surrounds its effect. The cause grasps its effect fully; the effect grasps its cause only in part. So the Infinite is the place of Adam Kadmon, Atzilut the place of Beri'ah, and so down. Rising and descending are moves of understanding, level to level. To be clothed in another is to be grasped by it: the head of Atik is not clothed in Arikh Anpin, because Arikh cannot grasp it. Adam Kadmon 'clothes the line' only by grasping His acts.
