רואה ואינו נראהHe Sees and Is Not Seen

Every rank knows more that He is, none what He is.

The sixth principle: we know that God is, never what He is. The Ari says no thought grasps Ein Sof at all. Even the sefirot know it only as a body knows its soul, by its effects. If His essence were known, it would have a limit. Nor can part of it be known, since He has no parts. But Ra'aya Meheimna says He emanated the sefirot 'so that He be known'. Yehoyada answers that what is known is His greatness and providence through His works, not His essence. Knowledge that He must exist does grow by rank. We reach it from one or two proofs, angels from a hundred, higher beings from a thousand, and higher still from a hundred thousand. Deny any of the six, Yehoyada closes, and you have no share in Israel's God.
