A chick's thirst reaches heaven; so does the ladder put back.
Within a chapter on pride and the harm it does, Kaidanover warns against causing pain to any creature, even an animal or a bird, since every creature has its own star that accuses on its behalf. He cites the Ḥaredim: a worthy man hosted the Ari with great honor and asked, in return, why his wife had stopped bearing children. The Ari told him: a small ladder stood in your house, and the young chicks climbed it to drink from a water vessel. Your wife had the maid take it away, only to keep the house clean. The chicks, too young to fly, went thirsty, and their chirping rose before God, so she was made barren. The man put the ladder back, and she conceived again. God watches over every creature.
