The miser's keys hang on another's wall.
'May God bless you and keep you': bless with wealth, and keep you from harmful spirits. Kaidanover tells of a rich miser who skipped Monday and Thursday prayers to avoid the charity box. His one mitzvah: he circumcised children without pay. A demon in human form invited him to a circumcision, drove him two days through wild hills to a village of fine houses. The mother, a human girl the demons had stolen, warned him to eat, drink and take nothing. He refused every meal and gift. The host showed him rooms of silver and gold, then a room of iron keys on nails, and among them a ring like his own. 'I rule the demons set over misers,' he said. 'We hold their keys.' He gave him his keys. The mohel went home, built a synagogue, and gave freely.
