Reach upward and the channel opens.

The Supreme Wisdom ordained that creatures receive divine bounty in proportion to their own arousal toward God: when they draw near and seek His face, bounty flows; if they do not, it does not. Since God wants their good at all times, He established prayer as a daily service through which success and blessing descend according to their needs. Prayer is also a gift of closeness: though by nature man is far from the light and sunk in darkness, he is permitted to stand before God and call His name. Hence one may not interrupt it, and the three steps back at its end return him to his ordinary state.
