ענין החלוםWhat Rises in Sleep

inyan ha-chalomIn Gamatria ↗

At night the soul climbs while the body sleeps.

Time is divided into day for work and night for rest, and sleep renews body and spirit for each morning. In sleep the senses and intellect rest and only imagination roams, assembling remnants of the day and vapors rising to the brain; that is ordinary dreaming. The higher soul also loosens its ties: its parts up to ruach rise and wander, while nefesh stays with the body. They may meet appointees of nature, angels, or demons, and what they grasp can descend into imagination, true or false according to the intermediary, always mixed with idle images (Berakhot 55a). Prophetic dreams are treated separately.
