Many clouded mirrors, or one polished glass.

Prophecy reaches a person through intermediaries, as glass serves the eye. For all prophets except Moses it came by vision or dream: God uses dreaming, already part of human nature, as its channel, and the prophet's senses shut down as in sleep. They saw as through many lenses relaying an image from one to the next, and unpolished ones; what they saw was truly the Glory, yet received in riddles and parables. Moses prophesied fully awake, mouth to mouth (Numbers 12:8), as through a single polished lens, seeing the image whole and clear, and he could seek that connection at will.
