A gift becomes yours only when you have earned it.
A good merely attached to someone is not complete; its receiver should be its owner, the one who acquired it. That ownership is a small likeness to God, who is perfect by His very nature. So God created both perfections and deficiencies, and a creature poised evenly between them, given means to gain the one and shed the other. Every perfection flows from the shining of His face and every lack from its hiding. Hence each perfection a person acquires is also a firmer hold on its root, until gaining perfection and cleaving to God become a single thing.
