He wanted to live where He is least seen.

The Midrash says God desired 'a dwelling in the lower realms'. For Him there is no up or down; 'lower' means most hidden. The worlds descend through layer upon layer of concealment, down to this physical world, so dark that it seems to deny Him. That is the purpose: when the other side is subdued, darkness turns to light, and light out of darkness is brighter than anything above. The Giving of the Torah was a foretaste, and the messianic era will complete it, through the commandments done now. Faith in God's unity brings the King home.
