נפש מקליפת נוגהThe Animal Soul

nefesh mikelipat nogahIn Gamatria ↗

A husk that glows: shadow, with light caught in its grain.

Every Jew, righteous or wicked, has two souls. The first is clothed in the blood and gives the body its life. From it rise the coarse traits, each traced to one of four elements: anger and pride from fire, craving for pleasure from water, frivolity and idle talk from air, sluggishness and sadness from earth. Yet the same soul also carries natural kindness and compassion. The text explains why: in a Jew it comes from kelipat nogah, the 'glowing husk', a shell of mixed good and evil, rooted in the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.
