Each thought turned away sends light higher than the fall.

Should the beinoni despair because bad thoughts keep coming? No: each time he pushes one away, the 'other side' (sitra achra, the force opposed to holiness) is subdued, below and above. Of a power that 'soars like an eagle', God says 'from there I will bring you down'. This gives God a special pleasure. There are two delicacies above: the sweetness of tzaddikim, who transform evil, and the sharp-but-seasoned dish of beinonim, who subdue it while it is still strong. Perhaps a person was created for exactly this lifelong fight.
