Small rings in an endless chain, asking what the chain is for.

The introduction opens with five plain questions. What is our essence? What is our part in the long chain of reality, of which we are 'small rings'? Why do we look so flawed, when a perfect Maker must make perfect works? How could the Good create beings who suffer all their days? How could the Eternal bring forth what passes away? He will ask more, but only about God's deeds, never His essence: how anything is new to Him, how a soul is 'a part of God above', how impurity comes from holiness, why the dead rise.
