הסולםWhy a Ladder

ha-sulamIn Gamatria ↗

A ladder is not the room; climb, and go inside.

Even the smallest holy light needs all four kinds of work, so no one is exempt from the inner Torah; the dryness and darkness of this generation come from its neglect, even by the devout. As Maimonides taught, a line of a thousand blind walkers is safe if one who sees leads it. People feared the Zohar's bodily images would lead them astray, so Ashlag wrote a commentary that strips every image of the physical, above place and time, and named it the Sulam, the Ladder. A ladder is not the goal: climb, and enter the upper room.
