Desire grows until it can feel what another feels.

The goal is the fourth phase of desire, but it cannot appear at once; it unfolds through three earlier ones. The still moves only as a whole, never in its parts. The growing moves in each part — it rises, turns to the sun, takes in and gives off. The living gives each creature its own sensation, but none feels another's pain or joy. The speaking, the human, senses others, so it lacks whatever they have, and its envy would swallow the world. That is the measure of what it can become.
