Every ring that gives is shadowed by a ring that only takes.

Left in its raw form, the will to receive would keep the souls apart forever. To correct it, the Creator made the worlds as two systems, 'one opposite the other': four holy worlds, Atzilut, Beriah, Yetzirah and Asiyah, filled with the desire to bestow, and opposite them four impure worlds that hold the desire to receive for oneself — the klippot, the shells. Because they only take while He only gives, they are His exact opposite, cut off from the Life of lives, and so are called dead.
