Every one of us was a star in one first body.

Every soul was originally contained in Adam's soul, which, like a body, had 248 limbs and 365 sinews, 613 in all, plus countless hairs. Each limb and sinew is a 'root', a complete figure in its own right holding many sparks. To know his soul-root, a person must know which limb, sinew or hair of Adam he comes from. This is how the sages read 'Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?'
