Hands feed the nefesh, the voice calls in the wind, and secrets wake the breath.

The nefesh of Asiyah is repaired by keeping the 248 positive commandments and damaged by breaking the 365 prohibitions. The ruach is gained by studying the Oral Torah for its own sake, and the neshamah by the inner secrets of the Torah. A nefesh without its ruach is compared to a wife left hungry and in the dark by a husband gone overseas; when Torah study brings the ruach, it is as though he came home. Neglecting each level of PaRDeS (plain, hinted, homiletic, secret) damages Tiferet in a different one of the four worlds.
