Back again, for the one lamp left unlit.

Souls return for three reasons: to repair a transgression, to complete a mitzvah they lacked, or to guide others. The first is close to sin, the second far from it, and the third will surely not sin. A man may also return to take his destined mate. A new soul must keep all 613 commandments in deed, speech and thought, and study PaRDeS. An old soul needs only what it lacked before, which is why individual sages were especially careful with one particular mitzvah. Commandments tied to the Temple wait until it is rebuilt, and failing to have children is the gravest omission.
