What did not fall, flew: one to wings, one to fire, one waited.
Adam's soul-parts from Atzilut, called the 'upper radiance', did not fall into the klippot when he sinned. They departed upward, and the book calls this the death decreed for eating from the tree. Enoch took the neshamah of Atzilut and became the angel Metatron. Elijah took the ruach of Atzilut, which is why he never died and Scripture speaks of his 'ruach'. The nefesh of Atzilut hovered over Adam until Cain and Abel took it. Joseph and later R. Ishmael ben Elisha carried the Enoch-root, which explains their legendary beauty.
